How laughter can help reduce dry eye symptoms
At Lynne Fernandes Optometrists, we deliver excellence by staying at the forefront of Dry Eye treatments and integrating new research into our clinical work. Recent research in the British Medical Journal suggests laughter can ease dry eye symptoms as effectively as eye drops.
We asked our Clinic Director, Gerard Fernandes, about the study. The study involved 299 participants aged 18-45 with dry eye symptoms. Over eight weeks, one group used artificial tears four times daily, while the other completed laughter exercises for the same duration. Results showed improvement in symptoms and clinical signs in both groups. Gerard explains: “When we laugh, two things happen: respiratory muscles signal the tear-producing lacrimal gland to increase tear production, and the orbicularis oculi muscles around the eye contract, stimulating the meibomian glands to release oils that improve tear viscosity, keeping tears on the eye longer for better lubrication.” Tears are essential for clear vision and protecting the eyes from dust, debris, and bacteria. In dry eye disease, tears are either insufficient or evaporate too quickly. While laughter over 90 minutes daily for eight weeks may not be practical for most, it highlights the importance of treating the root cause of dry eye.

Staff picks: Favourite frames
Daniel is an Optical Advisor at our Gloucester Road practice, with over 10 years of optical experience. His favourite frames are Moscot Lemtosh. We asked him why:
“I feel that the Lemtosh frame is the master of all trades—it’s very versatile and can be worn casually when I’m at home, yet it’s very smart for my more formal wear at work.”
“The graduation of colour gives the frame a soft warmth to it.”
