Interview with Gerard – Optometrist of the Year 2024
Congratulations, Gerard, on being awarded Optometrist of the Year 2024! What does this achievement mean to you?
Gerard: Thank you! It’s an incredible honour to win the Optometrist of the Year award. It means so much to me because the judging panel were drawn from the full range of our industry. They included academics, supplier CEOs, clinicians and journalists. The award is a reflection of my passion for helping people see their best while looking their best. It’s also a testament to the wonderful support I’ve had from my team and our amazing customers over the years.
What inspired you to become an Optometrist?
Gerard: I’ve always been fascinated by the intricate relationship between vision and quality of life. The ability to blend science, health, and style in one profession is incredibly rewarding. Knowing that I can make a tangible difference in someone’s daily life by improving their vision is what drives me every day.

Gerard: EyeSense is Personalised, Predictive and Preventative eyecare for those prepared to invest in their eyes for now and the future. We have evidence-based plans for Dry Eyes, Myopia Management, for those who want enhanced screening for eye diseases such as Glaucoma or AMD, for those already managed by the NHS who want personalised care. Over 4,000 patients who trust our optometrists to look after their eyes privately under EyeSense demonstrates the need and success of this work.
What’s been your biggest challenge this year?
Gerard: I’m excited to introduce even more innovative eyewear solutions. We’ll continue focusing on enhanced readers for modern lifestyles and varifocals designed for comfort and precision. Plus, our upcoming collections will feature even more independent designs that truly stand out. The Gloucester Road will expand to meet the increased demand for excellence in eyecare.
What’s next for your practice in 2025 and beyond?
Gerard: Like any business, understanding and adapting to the needs of our customers is always a challenge. Sometimes, even frames we adore don’t quite resonate with our demographic, which is why we’re holding our clearance sale. It’s all about learning and making space for what works best for our community.
