What is IPL?

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is a proven treatment for dry eyes, specifically meibomian gland dysfunction (one of the most common causes of eye discomfort) and for Demodex (a genus of microscopic mites that can live in eyelash follicles or facial pores). It is also known for its aesthetic uses, such as treating wrinkles.

I had been disappointed after having cataract surgery as my eye sight hadn't improved. I was affected by car headlights and other lights. Dan carefully listened to me and carried out a thorough eye test. Daniel was very patient showing me a good range of frames. He carefully adjusted the frames to fit me. Putting on my new glasses makes everywhere look brighter and clearer with less glare from bright lights. The glasses were very expensive but my eyesight is much improved. I feel I have been well looked after

I have just had a fabulous experience with the opticians on Wells Road. I had had two eye tests at Specsavers but we could not work out why my eyes were still hurting and getting worse and worse. So I went back to my previous opticians which was Lynne Fernandes where I saw Jakub Plociennik, and very quickly he ascertained that I needed treatment for dry eyes. I had not realized that this condition can lead to changing vision, inability to focus, headaches and eye strain. He prescribed me a course of treatment, and I'm not overstating this when I'm saying this was really life-changing. I am very grateful to the staff and particularly Jakub's expert knowledge. They are worth every penny 😊

I have had such good service in the last few years at Lynne Fernandes. I originally came in order to get contact lenses to suit me and have joined using the Eyesense to get the benefit of the dry eye clinic. I’ve needed to see Rebecca at short notice couple of times and she always has time to listen, investigate and discuss thoroughly the concerns. Lovely lady to boot!

A great local company with fantastic service and a wide range of cutting edge expertise and technology for complex assessments of the eye. I have my retina laser scanned as part of monitoring for glaucoma, not available routinely and normally only found in an eye hospital. The annual eye test is rigorous and the dry eye clinic a godsend. The place to go..oh and they also sell very stylish frames at the upper end cost wise.

Excellent Service really know their stuff. Brilliant eyecare and they go above and beyond, nothing is to much trouble. I went there for dry eyes as I was really struggling to get help and advice from anywhere and thanks to their expertise I now have it undercontrol. Highly recommend.

After having been attending Bristol Eye Hospital for the last 3 years ago and having an incorrect diagnosis initially for my eye problems, I was told about Connor at Lyn Fernandez. It was a life saver seeing him and he has helped with my eye problems ever since and he has been able to do treatment for Meibomian Gland Dysfunction, which the eye hospital could not do, and to give advice and support for dry eye disease. I would recommend anyone to go there with eye problems.

How does IPL therapy for Dry Eye work?

Intense pulsed laser therapy uses 8-10 soft pulses of light that target the area of skin just beneath your eyes. This treatment stimulates the release of neurotransmitters, which causes the Meibomian glands to release a better quality of fluid. This in turn leads to the stabilisation of the lipid layer of the tear film.

The light has other benefits such as unblocking glands as the patient’s meibum melts, reducing any populations of Demodex mites and increasing the body’s natural production of ATP (adenosine triphosphate) to support collagen creation and a healthy immune system.

A four-session treatment plan is recommended, with appointments taking place on or as close as possible to day 15, day 45 and day 75 following an initial session. The therapeutic effect of IPL can last from six months to three years. On average, we recommend a top-up treatment annually.

The TearStim offers a new, long-lasting solution to help manage eye comfort.
