What is IPL?

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is a proven treatment for dry eyes, specifically meibomian gland dysfunction (one of the most common causes of eye discomfort) and for Demodex (a genus of microscopic mites that can live in eyelash follicles or facial pores). It is also known for its aesthetic uses, such as treating wrinkles.

IPL Treatment in Bristol

Our Bristol IPL eye treatment can be used to combat the symptoms of Dry Eye. Using advanced technology, our optometrists can help to relieve sore, watery eyes over a course of just four in-house sessions.

Dry Eye is a condition that can be caused by environment, medication, hormone changes, age and various long-term health conditions. The impact of Dry Eye upon daily life can be felt while undertaking regular activities such as reading and driving, with symptoms causing inconvenience and discomfort.

Our specialised IPL eye treatment offers improvement of symptoms following just one session, with a further three recommended.

How does IPL therapy for Dry Eye work?

Intense pulsed laser therapy uses 8-10 soft pulses of light that target the area of skin just beneath your eyes. This treatment stimulates the release of neurotransmitters, which causes the Meibomian glands to release a better quality of fluid. This in turn leads to the stabilisation of the lipid layer of the tear film.

The light has other benefits such as unblocking glands as the patient’s meibum melts, reducing any populations of Demodex mites and increasing the body’s natural production of ATP (adenosine triphosphate) to support collagen creation and a healthy immune system.

A four-session treatment plan is recommended, with appointments taking place on or as close as possible to day 15, day 45 and day 75 following an initial session. The therapeutic effect of IPL can last from six months to three years. On average, we recommend a top-up treatment annually.

The TearStim offers a new, long-lasting solution to help manage eye comfort.
